August, usually a quiet month of lazy summer days filled with peace and tranquillity, didn't really seem quite the same this year. Something was stirring, awakening, and preparing to break free. Strange noises and weird rumblings deep underground had been reported! Judging by the ferocious sounds being heard during late August, it was obvious that the situation could no longer be contained. Weird Science had to call for help from Blittersoft to control the beast. If it broke loose now, how would people cope? Such things were not expected for many months to come, so were we prepared? It all began back in April 1997, a dark time of doom and despair. Suddenly, light appeared on the horizon. Gateway bought the greatest ever multimedia computer of its time and formed a new development company, Amiga Inc. They set about finding ways to leverage the technology into a new awesome computer with facilities and power previously only dreamt about. In May 1998, at the World Of Amiga Show, Amiga Inc. announced a new machine with multimedia capabilities far beyond that of any existing computer. The word went out and the whole Amiga Community was talking about DIGITAL CONVERGENCE. Alas, power has a price, and the price of this utopia, was a gestation period of 18 months. It was unsatisfactory! Appetites were whetted and everyone wanted it today! What was needed now was a new machine capable of running the latest software. Consisting of stunning 2D graphics capability, coupled with realistic 3D graphics, mind blowing sound, ability to play the latest DVD movies on the screen and output to a TV and full World Wide Web integration. In other words DIGITAL CONVERGENCE NOW! The Amiga Community slept peacefully in their beds during the summer months, dreaming of a time when they too could encounter the age of Digital Convergence. To be able to enjoy the latest entertainment and productivity software, to experience the eye popping, high quality movies on DVD with ear shattering Dolby Digital sound, and to be totally immersed in whole new and realistic world of 3D. Whilst in their repose they drifted between this High Tech world of DVD and 3D into more familiar territory of their Amiga software collection. All working on this fantastic new, totally integrated Multimedia Home Entertainment System. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No one said anything about the old and the new on the same system. This really is a fantasy. Next you will ask for Amiga, PC and Mac software all on one system and at a speed to make it usable. We're not immortals! However at Weird Science and Blittersoft we are wholly committed to the Amiga. Even with the sad demise of CU Amiga Magazine this situation will not change. As such, we have jointly set about trying to achieve the dream. We wanted it, we deserved it, and only Amiga users were worthy of it. On September 1st 1998, something clawed its way out from the pit. Spitting, biting and growling upon an unsuspecting world. From the gates of Hades has spawned Cerberus - a coalescence of Beast and Machine into a Totally Integrated Multimedia Home Entertainment System of awesome power. .........The Aftermath |
